At least 30 rape cases are reported per week in the Free State

Police in the Free State say the number of rape cases in the province is increasing significantly, with over 30 cases being opened each week. According to SAPS, most of the reported cases occur when the women are under the influence of alcohol or other substances.

According to SAPS Free State Sergeant Peter Kareli, a disturbing number of rape cases have been reported at various police stations across the province. Kareli also called on communities to join them in curbing these crimes by raising awareness and avoiding walking alone at night as most victims are encountered on their way home from pubs at night.

“The most recent incident involves a 9-year-old boy who was raped by his uncle in his house.”

He also stressed, among other things, that there are important security measures that could prevent such incidents.

“It is advisable to consume alcohol responsibly and in the company of trusted people. It is also a good idea to arrange safe transport home after a night of drinking. Make sure the house is locked upon returning home, as some victims wake up to find themselves being raped by an offender.”

He also urged victims to report rape cases immediately to the nearest police station and assured that the victims would be placed in a victim-friendly facility.
