Suspect arrested in Madison after fatal shooting in Columbus

The suspect in a fatal early morning shooting in Columbus was arrested in Madison Thursday afternoon.

Columbus Police Chief Dennis Weiner said a Columbus Police officer heard what sounded like fireworks downtown at 1:31 a.m. Thursday.

“Upon arrival to the area, he found an adult male suffering from gunshot wounds,” Weiner said in a statement. “Life-saving measures were attempted, however, the victim was pronounced deceased a short time later at Prairie Ridge Health.”

The suspect fled, but investigators reviewed video footage and identified the suspect, said Weiner, who was arrested in Madison at 1:54 p.m. The firearm believed to have been used was found on the path the suspect fled, Weiner said.

Weiner said further details would be announced at Friday’s press conference.

The Columbus Fourth of July Committee rerouted its parade around the 100 block of South Ludington Street to avoid the block where the investigation was taking place.
