How to stay cool and safe in extreme heat

  • Stay indoors – During heat warnings, residents are reminded to stay in their homes, drink plenty of fluids and contact neighbors and relatives who are at risk.
  • Drink enough fluids – Residents can refill water bottles at county parks, libraries or government buildings throughout the county
  • Do not leave children or pets in the car – Cars can quickly heat up to dangerous temperatures even with the window cracked open. Anyone left in a parked car is at risk, but children are especially at risk of heat stroke or death.
  • Wear appropriate clothing and sunscreen – Choose light, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing and apply sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher 30 minutes before going out.
