LockBit claims Wichita attack

BleepingComputer reports that the city of Wichita, Kansas, was disrupted by the LockBit ransomware operation, which threatened to expose all files filtered from the city’s network by May 15 if city officials refused to pay the ransom.

After initially reporting Sunday the immediate shutdown of the computer systems used in the city’s online services, officials continued to see significant disruption across the city as a result of the ransomware intrusion, including the suspension of automatic water bill payments and the Unavailability of public WiFi. Wi-Fi and phone services at some locations, as well as the loss of several services at the city library. Online transactions at the city’s parks, plazas and golf courses were also affected by the incident, officials said.

Meanwhile, LockBit’s admission of attacking the city of Wichita may have come in retaliation for the numerous sanctions against the group’s administrator, LockBitSupp, who, according to international law enforcement authorities, is Russian citizen Dmitry Yuryevich Khoroshev.
