Delta passengers receive vegetarian meals after spoiled food error

ATLANTA – Passengers on international Delta flights opted for the healthier option when it came to food on board on Thursday – and not voluntarily.

A Delta spokesperson confirmed that the Atlanta-based airline offered Main Cabin customers a pasta-only vegetarian option on about 75 international Delta flights between Wednesday and Thursday.

This came just days after a Delta flight from Detroit to Amsterdam on July 2 had to be diverted to New York’s Kennedy Airport on Wednesday morning after “reports emerged that some of the in-flight meal service in the main cabin had been spoiled.”

A spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates the airport, said 14 of the plane’s 277 passengers and 10 crew members were treated by medical personnel upon landing. None of them required hospitalization.

It was not clear how many people in total ate the tainted food. The passengers were rebooked from JFK to their final destinations on Wednesday.

“Delta’s food safety team has instructed our suppliers to immediately isolate the product and begin a thorough investigation into the incident,” a Delta spokesperson said in a prepared statement. “This is not the service Delta is known for and we sincerely apologize to our customers for the inconvenience and delays to their travels.”

As for food service, the airline is expected to resume normal operations on Friday.
