Black Houston UPS Driver Makes History, Celebrates 50 Years of Package Delivery

At national scale — Cal Murray, a dedicated UPS driver from Houston, Texas, has spent the last 50 years delivering packages and has driven 4 million miles without a single accident. He attributes his impeccable record to UPS’s commitment to safety training.Murray said, “The company’s commitment to safety training is what has kept me safe. UPS invests a lot of time and money to give us the tools we need to succeed, and it’s paying off.”

“We are the safest drivers on the road,” he proudly declared.

In 2023, UPS increased its investment in safety training to more than $409 million, an increase of $66 million from the previous year. This commitment ensures UPS drivers, including Murray, are prepared to meet challenges such as increased traffic and driver distraction.

“I drive on one of the most dangerous stretches of highway in the United States and I see accidents every week,” Murray said. “Managing other drivers on the road can be a challenge. You have to drive not only for yourself, but for others as well.”

According to UPS news, last year Murray was among nearly 10,000 drivers worldwide who have driven accident-free for 25 years or more, collectively logging 1.5 billion miles without a single incident. These drivers proudly wear the UPS Circle of Honor patch, a badge recognizing their exceptional achievement.

As Murray celebrates 50 years of safe driving, he continues to mentor young drivers, sharing the knowledge gained from decades on the road.

“I watch the drivers every day and show them what they’re doing well and what they can improve,” he said. “I want them to be as safe as possible and be able to go home to their families.”
