Surfer killed in Mexico left a sweet voice message for his girlfriend before his death

Before Callum Robinson, his brother and a friend died on a surfing trip in Mexico, the Australian native left his girlfriend a romantic voice message.

“It’s 11:11 a.m. and all I’m thinking about is you,” Robinson reportedly said in the message. “I just wanted to leave you a quick note and say hello, baby.”

7 News reported that Robinson’s friend, Emily Horwath, posted the voicemail message on Instagram with the caption, “Will play this on repeat.”

“I hope you have a phenomenal start to your day,” the voicemail continued. “For some reason I feel a big grin on your face today. I hope you are full of positivity and smiles. Cheers, baby. Miss you.”

Robinson, 33, who moved to San Diego from Australia, his brother Jake Robinson, 30, of Perth, Australia, and their American boyfriend Jack Carter Rhoad, 30, went missing on April 27 during a surfing trip near Ensenada. On May 3, authorities found their bodies with gunshot wounds at the bottom of a 50-foot well in Santo Tomas, Baja California.

A man identified by his first and middle name under a Mexican law, Jesús Gerardo, 33, has since been charged in connection with their deaths.

The San Diego Union-Tribunethe BBC and The Independent reported that a judge in Mexico heard in court that the suspect had told his girlfriend that he had attacked “three gringos” and before he allegedly clarified that he had killed the trio.

The media reports that Jesús Gerardo will be charged with enforced disappearance, but he is expected to be charged with murder. The BBC reported that the girlfriend and another man were arrested for their alleged involvement.

It is not immediately clear whether Jesús Gerardo has entered a plea or retained a lawyer.

The Union-Tribune reported that the girlfriend claimed to authorities that the suspect attacked the three men over her vehicle’s tires.

Baja California’s chief prosecutor, María Elena Andrade Ramírez, said at a news conference that authorities believe the three men were killed because of their truck tires, the Associated Press reported.

“The world has become a darker place for us,” Callum and Jake’s mother Debra Robinson said, according to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. “We also mourn the loss of (Jack) Carter Rhoad, a close friend. They were young men who enjoyed their passion for surfing together.”
