2 dead and 7 injured after collision between suspected drunk driver and New York park on July 4th

Four victims were trapped under a gray Ford F-150 pickup truck.

Two people are dead and seven others were injured after a suspected drunk driver drove his vehicle into a park on New York City’s Lower East Side, police said Thursday evening.

The New York Fire Department arrived on the scene within three minutes and found four victims trapped under a gray Ford F-150 pickup truck, officials said.

According to authorities, the FDNY worked with the NYPD’s emergency unit to remove the patients from under the vehicle.

Two victims were pronounced dead, police said. Two victims were in critical condition, three victims were in serious condition and two victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries, officials said.

Among the hospital patients were a mother and her two small children, police said.

Police said emergency responders smelled alcohol at the scene and tests are currently being conducted to determine whether the driver was drunk at the time of the accident.

The driver, suspected of driving under the influence, was detained by Good Samaritans until police arrived at the scene, officials said.

Authorities said there was currently no suspicion of terrorism, but investigations were ongoing.
