Two men found dead in Northern California river on July 4, officials say

(FOX40.COM) — Two men drowned Thursday after their bodies were found in a Northern California river, according to the Nevada County Consolidated Fire Department.

The agency said it was called to Highway 49 and the Yuba River around 1:30 p.m. along with the California Highway Patrol Air Operations Team because a person had entered the water and had not resurfaced.

When emergency services arrived at the scene, they found an unconscious man and began CPR. The man was later pronounced dead by emergency personnel.

“Due to the challenging and steep terrain, units from Nevada County Consolidated Fire, North San Juan Fire Protection District, CAL FIRE NEU, State Parks and Sierra Nevada Ambulance utilized an engineered rope rescue system to quickly gain access to the victim,” the agency said on Facebook.

Shortly after the accident scene was cleared, reports of another possible drowning were received. Moments later, rescue workers found another unconscious man who was pronounced dead.

“Our thoughts are with the families affected by these tragic events today,” said Nevada County Consolidated Fire Department.

The drownings occurred two days after an Oakland man was found dead in the Modesto Reservoir after drowning while swimming in the body of water with his family.
