Video of controversial arrest of woman in New Castle County, Delaware released; incident currently under investigation

BEAR, Delaware (WPVI) – Police in New Castle County, Delaware, have released bodycam video of a woman’s controversial arrest.

It happened on Saturday in the parking lot of a supermarket on Pulaski Highway.

The video was released on Thursday, July 4. Authorities say they are currently investigating the incident, which involved the use of force.

According to police, it all started when an officer observed a driver committing several traffic violations and confirmed that the car’s registration had been suspended without insurance.

They say the officer attempted to stop her at the intersection of Pulaski Highway and Wellington Drive, but she continued driving to a Royal Farms parking lot in Bear.

When she stops, the video shows the police officer asking her to get out of the car and telling her that she is being arrested, but she refuses.

There is a back and forth, and after about four to five minutes in the video, more officers arrive and the arrest turns into a physical altercation.

The video shows several police officers bringing the woman to the ground.

One of them is seen hitting her on the head several times while a police officer yells at her to get off his foot.

“She’s holding my foot, let go of my foot!” the officer is heard saying.

The woman is eventually handcuffed and taken into custody.

New Castle County confirms that the officers’ conduct is under investigation.

In a statement they also said:

“In collaboration with the New Castle County Police Accountability Board, we will conduct a review of all policies, training and practices related to de-escalation and cultural competency.”

Action News cannot determine what charges the woman will face in this case.

Her attorney told Action News the video is currently under review and expressed surprise that New Castle County police released it on a holiday.
