Dead dog found in animal shelter causes outrage

LAREDO, Texas (KGNS) – The Animal Protective Society (LAPS) of Laredo was horrified on Monday, July 1, by the tragic discovery of a dead German Shepherd abandoned on their doorstep and exposed to the scorching heat.

LAPS has filed a police report and is asking anyone who saw a black pickup truck leaving their property around 6:40 a.m. on Monday to come forward with information.

In a similar incident, Best Friends for Life reported a heartbreaking case involving Bonnie, a malnourished and dehydrated cat who was left abandoned in a carrier.

Both organizations emphasize that abandoning and neglecting animals are serious offenses.

Michelle Ortiz, a representative of Best Friends for Life, emphasized the seriousness of leaving animals unattended in confined spaces without access to food or water, describing it as endangerment, abuse and neglect of the animals.

Cynthia Gutierrez, shelter manager at LAPS, emphasized the importance of properly surrendering animals and seeking help when needed.

In Texas, abandoning or abandoning pets is illegal and is considered animal cruelty, punishable by fines or jail time, depending on the circumstances.

Anyone with information regarding these incidents is asked to contact Laredo Crime Stoppers at 956-727-8477 or 311.
