Beach visitor in New Smyrna Beach hospitalized after shark bite

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Florida. – According to Volusia County Beach Safety, a beachgoer was bitten by a shark Thursday afternoon at New Smyrna Beach and was taken to the hospital.

In a press release, VCBS officials announced that the beachgoer – a 21-year-old man from Ohio who was visiting the area – was bitten on the right foot just before 4 p.m. while playing soccer in “knee-deep water” near Flagler Avenue.

He was then taken to hospital for treatment, but according to the press release, his injuries are not life-threatening.

No further information has been provided yet, including which species of shark was responsible for the attack.
