Jason Derulo talks about breaking his neck in a 2013 gym accident, his recovery and how he’s moving on | Jason Derulo | Just Jared: Celebrity News and Gossip

Jason Derulo looked back on the near-death experience he had when he broke his neck in a gym accident in 2013.

In case you didn’t know, the 34-year-old singer had to cancel a tour to recover from the very dangerous fracture.

Jason explained that it happened after a trainer had him perform a risky move several times in a row. He described the recommendation as “one of the worst ideas anyone has ever had,” via EW.

“I slipped during one of the backward volleys and landed on my head, breaking the second cervical vertebra,” he said. Jason recalled being afraid he was going to die after hearing “a loud crack.”

He remembered that his mother was in the car and he wanted to avoid scaring her.

“After lying on the ground for five minutes, I pulled myself together and walked to the car, holding my neck,” he said. Paris. “And then I say, ‘Mom, I think I hurt myself a little’ – so in this light voice – ‘I think I hurt myself a little inside, we should probably go to the hospital to get it checked out.'”

The singer hid his severe pain and finally made it to the hospital, where the doctor told him that he had a so-called “hangman’s fracture.” Jason recalled the doctor telling him he could have ended up “paralyzed or worse.”

Fortunately, he only had to rest for seven months to recover. This effectively ended his tour, but the artist was now on his way to a comeback after his recovery.

“I created a routine: I got up in the morning, went to the gym and ran, I ran for about 45 minutes every day and then spent many hours in the studio,” he explained. “Every day at the same time, in the same place, and that’s where I wrote my most successful album, which Talk dirty album that had ‘Talk Dirty,’ ‘Other Side,’ ‘Marry Me,’ ‘Wiggle’ – all kinds of hits from that album. That’s because I developed a routine, so it was like a normal thing in my life. When I’m able to really follow a routine, amazing things happen.”
