Shooting outside hotel in Yellowstone National Park: Ranger injured, shooter dead

CNN

A park ranger was injured and the shooter was killed in a shooting in Yellowstone National Park, according to the National Park Service.

“There is no active threat to the public,” a park service spokesman said in a statement to CNN after “a significant law enforcement incident.”

“Rangers responded to a report of an individual with a firearm making threatening remarks,” the statement said. “When rangers contacted the individual, an exchange of gunfire occurred between the individual and law enforcement rangers.”

The shooter has died and his identity is not being released at this time, park service officials said. The ranger is in stable condition after being flown to a nearby regional hospital.

The shooting occurred in Canyon Village, a collection of lodges and cabins in the park, north of Yellowstone Lake and away from the park’s most popular tourist areas.

“An area around the Canyon Lodge complex remains closed for the investigation,” the statement continued.

The FBI is conducting an investigation into the incident with assistance from special agents from the National Park Service, the park service said.

“The FBI is working with the National Parks Service to investigate an incident that occurred this morning in Yellowstone National Park,” Vikki Migoya, a spokeswoman for the FBI’s Denver field office, said in a statement to CNN.

“As the matter is ongoing, we cannot comment further,” she said.
