Buffalo Bills DC: Ben Johnson is the toughest offensive coordinator to face

The Detroit Lions offense is one of the most difficult units to prepare for in the entire National Football League.

On the “Centered on Buffalo” podcast, Bills defensive coordinator Bobby Babich was asked which offensive coordinator was the most difficult to prepare for.

With so many offensive weapons, including Jameson Williams, Sam LaPorta, Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jahmyr Gibbs, it’s understandable why Babich pegged Ben Johnson as a tough opponent to face.

“Ben Johnson. It was funny, we were just having this conversation today,” Babich said. “I think Detroit does a great job, and it goes back years, they do a lot of things and they do them well. Which is hard to do and hard to prepare for.”

Johnson has been widely praised for his creativity. The Lions have deployed unique personnel groups, formations and plays since he took over as coordinator in 2022.

Passing game coordinator Tanner Engstrand told reporters how working with Johnson and Dan Campbell has helped his development as an offensive coach.

“I think it was a learning experience. You come to work and you learn every day from these guys. I mean, Ben is a wealth of knowledge, as is Dan,” Engstrand said. “So you come to work and you think you’re doing the right thing and you are. You learn something new every day. Whether it’s helping put the game plan together or just something else we want to look at or just depending on the week as to what direction we want to go in.

“I had a lot of stuff to do every week that was pretty standard, but every week there was something new. Something new that came up that you took and you put into practice and you learned something from. So for me it was a really good learning experience.”
