1 dead and 3 injured after severe thunderstorm in state park in Kansas

One man died and three people were injured when a severe thunderstorm hit Russell County, Kansas, Sheriff Andrew Van Der Wege said in a press release.

The storm swept across Lake Wilson in Wilson State Park in rural central Kansas, bringing strong winds of 68 to 70 mph, the sheriff said, and overturned several mobile homes. The sheriff’s office said dispatch received several 911 calls starting at 11:52 p.m. Wednesday, and when officers arrived on scene, they found several overturned mobile homes.

During the search and rescue, officers found three injured and one dead. Christopher Montoya, 64, of Holyrood was found in the Hell Creek Park area of ​​the state park. His body was taken to the local morgue. An autopsy is planned, the sheriff said.

The injured were taken to Russell Regional Hospital. Further details on their condition were not released.

The sheriff’s office warned visitors to be cautious when heading to Lake Wilson due to debris and power outages.
