Suspect dead, ranger injured in July 4 shooting in Yellowstone National Park

In a shooting in Yellowstone National Park on July 4, a suspect was killed and a park ranger was injured, authorities said.

According to a statement from the National Park Service, rangers responded to Canyon Village, a central area of ​​the park, on a report of a person with a gun who was allegedly making threats. “When rangers contacted the individual, an exchange of gunfire occurred between the individual and law enforcement rangers,” the agency said.

The suspect died, according to the National Park Service, which did not immediately release the suspect’s name. A park ranger was injured in the incident and is in stable condition at a local hospital.

The agency said there was no active threat to the public following the incident.

According to the statement, the FBI is leading the investigation with assistance from special agents from the National Park Service. The National Park Service said the area around the Canyon Lodge complex is closed during the ongoing investigation.

“The details of this incident are currently under investigation,” the statement said. “No further information is available at this time.”
