Jessica Pegula stunned in second round at Wimbledon

But there was no question of repeating the feat in London. The Buffalo native, ranked No. 5 in the world, lost 6-4, 6-7 (7), 6-1 in the second round at Wimbledon to No. 42 Wang Xinyu on Thursday.

“A few days ago, I was asking my coach, ‘When is this going to happen?'” Wang said on the court after the match. “Jessica was really difficult to play on grass. Her ball was really low and I’m really happy that we won in the end.”

Pegula reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon a year ago. She is preparing for the Paris Olympics in 2024.
