Man arrested after Alleghany County shooting that injured teenager

ALLEGHANY COUNTY, Virginia. – A man was arrested and charged following a shooting outside a Selma residence, according to the Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office.

According to 10 News, authorities received a call shortly after 4:30 a.m. Thursday from a resident of the 1218 block of Staunton Street. The resident reported that four men were outside her home.

A Clifton Forge officer arrived at the scene and immediately notified dispatch that shots had been fired from the residence at a Nissan Altima that fled the scene.

We’re told the officer arrested a suspect identified as 37-year-old Christopher Sorrels of Selma.

The weapon, an AR .223, was recovered at the scene. At 4:48 a.m., LewisGale Alleghany contacted dispatch and reported that they had four men, including one with a gunshot wound to the right lower leg.

We were also informed that additional officers were called to the emergency room and secured the suspect vehicle and the four juveniles.

After investigating, we were told officers determined that three juveniles and an 18-year-old man were on or near the property on Staunton Street when the property owner exited the home and displayed a weapon.

As the individuals attempted to flee the scene, the homeowner began firing his weapon at the vehicle, hitting it multiple times. A juvenile was also shot in the right leg and taken to Roanoke Carilion Hospital.

The teenager is in stable condition and the investigation is ongoing.

Sorrels was accused of:

  • Malicious bodily harm

  • Use of a firearm in the commission of a crime

  • Shooting at an occupied vehicle
