Ranger shot in Yellowstone National Park; suspect dead

GREAT FALLS – A ranger in Yellowstone National Park was shot and killed in what park officials called a “significant” incident that involved numerous law enforcement officers.

The suspect is dead; the injured park ranger is in stable condition.

It happened in Canyon Village, which is located south of Tower Falls in the northern part of the park.

Yellowstone National Park officials said in a press release that there was a “significant police incident” in Canyon Village overnight Thursday.

Rangers responded to a report that a person with a firearm was making threats.

When park rangers made contact with the person, an “exchange of gunfire” occurred between the person and the rangers.

One ranger was injured and taken to a nearby regional hospital; his condition is said to be stable.

The suspect has died; the person’s name has not yet been released.

The area around the Canyon Lodge complex is cordoned off while authorities continue to investigate.

The FBI is leading the investigation with assistance from special agents from the National Park Service.

A visitor to Yellowstone National Park posted on X: “Active shooting in Yellowstone National Park right outside our hotel room in Canyon Villages. No info yet. We are stuck in our hotel rooms.”
