Investigations into Sontag’s murder continue

The Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate Sontag’s murder.

On Friday, June 21, Sheriff Ryan Everett said his office was investigating a homicide on Smith Ferry Road that occurred before 8 a.m. He asked that the information be shared with the SO or Crime Stoppers.

The victim of the crime was later identified as 71-year-old Greg Schoonover.

On Wednesday, July 3, Everett said, “Our investigators and I have collectively spent hundreds of hours solving this case and bringing those responsible to justice. This is one of those investigations that has been turned back and forth, left and right, up and down and inside out. We are far from finished and will not be until the responsible party(s) are arrested and brought before a judge and jury.”

The public has been “extremely limited” in sharing information, Everett said.

“If you have information and for some reason you don’t share it with us, in my eyes you are just as guilty as the person(s) physically responsible for his death,” Everett said. “I pray fervently that God will allow your conscience to attack your body from the inside out. I pray that you have the worst migraine headaches while also suffering from nausea and stomach pains. I hope and pray that this is the worst physical condition you can ever be in until you do the right thing and get rid of it by sharing your burden with us.”

Schoonover was a disabled veteran of the United States Armed Forces.

“If you consider yourself his friend and you have information, you owe it to him to come forward,” Everett said. “As an American citizen, you owe it to him to come forward if you have any possible information. As a living, breathing human being with a soul and a conscience, you owe it to him to pass on any helpful information to us.”

Anyone with information is asked to call the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office at 601-587-2961 or Pine Belt Crime Stoppers at 1-888-8CRIMES.
