City Council members congratulate Troy Finner after his retirement as Houston police chief

HOUSTON (KIAH) – As sudden as his retirement was, the reaction to the news was just as quick.

Houston Mayor John Whitmire accepted the retirement of Police Chief Troy Finner Tuesday evening, and at Wednesday morning’s City Council meeting, council members were ready to talk about it.

“I wanted to thank him for his work and everything he has done for the city of Houston and let him know that we support him and wish him the best,” said District K Council Member Martha Castex-Tatum and Mayor Pro Tem. said.

It’s unclear what Finner’s next move will be, but his replacement was quick to discuss the change in leadership within the Houston Police Department.

Acting Chief Larry Satterwhite spoke to the media Wednesday afternoon, first telling reporters about his 34 years with HPD and then what he envisions for HPD’s future.

“The mission of the Houston Police Department has not changed,” Satterwhite said. “No matter who is in the chief’s seat and making these decisions, our job is to protect the public. »

Back at City Hall, more council members had kinder words for the city’s now former police chief.

“I want to thank Chief Finner for his service to the City of Houston, keeping Houstonians safe, and for his commitment to public safety,” said District H Councilmember Mario Castillo.

“I certainly want to commend Chief Finner because he has done a great job and served this city honorably and with great pride,” said Position 2 Council Member Willie Davis.
