Rapist becomes first Japanese to be caned after conviction in Singapore – SoraNews24 -Japan News-

Corporal punishment included in sentence for 2019 crimes.

On 1st of July Supreme Court of Singapore has made its judgment in the case Ikko Daycarea 38-year-old Japanese national living in the Southeast Asian country where he had worked as a hairdresser. Kita was on trial for a series of incidents that occurred in late 2019 in which he was accused of sexual abuse of a 20-year-old woman.

According to prosecutors, Kita met a drunken Singaporean student in a nightlife district of the city in the early hours of December 30. The two did not know each other, but Kita took the woman in a taxi and then to his apartment. When he reached the building, he performed indecent acts on her in the elevator and raped her without her consent. After taking her to his apartment, he filmed himself committing the acts and later sent the video to a friend.

Kita was arrested the same day but released on bail the following day. He had been in police custody since his trial in the lower court, which took place in spring 2023. Now that Kita’s trial in the higher court, in which he pleaded guilty to the charges, has also been concluded, The court sentenced him to 17 years and six months in prisonSince corporal punishment is permitted in the Singaporean legal system, Kita was also sentenced to corporal punishmentwith 20 eyelashes added to his prison sentence. According to the Japanese Embassy in Singapore, this is the first time that a Japanese citizen has been caned in the country.
