Man found dead in Charleston County jail cell, SLED investigates

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) – Officials report that a man has died while in custody at the Al Cannon Detention Center; it appears to be a natural death.

The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office arrived at the detention center around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday after a death was reported.

When officers arrived, they found a man alone in his cell. He was unresponsive.

Deputies, medical personnel, North Charleston Fire Department and EMS attempted life-saving measures but were unsuccessful.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The South Carolina Department of Law Enforcement has been asked to investigate the death. The Sheriff’s Office’s Bureau of Professional Standards will also conduct an internal investigation to comply with protocol.

The Charleston County Coroner has not yet identified the victim.
