French politicians attacked during election campaign | World news

More than 30,000 police officers are deployed across the country to prevent unrest on Sunday when a second round of voting begins.

A candidate from Emmanuel Macron’s centrist alliance has been attacked during his election campaign, just days before the second round of the French elections.

Government spokeswoman Prisca Thevenot and a handful of colleagues were putting up posters when they arrived in Hauts-de-Seine near Paris.

Ms Thevenot was unharmed, but her deputy Virginie Lanlo and a party activist were taken to hospital after the attack at around 8 p.m. on Wednesday.

Four people, including three minors, were taken into police custody, the public prosecutor’s office said.

Details of the attack and the motive have not yet been confirmed, but according to French media, one of the injured was hit by a scooter.

Ms Lanlo reportedly suffered an injury to her arm while the activist suffered a broken jaw.

In a social media statement on Thursday morning, Ms Thevenot thanked the police and firefighters who came to the aid of her team.

She added: “Thank you all for your support. Violence is never the answer.”

Prime Minister Gabriel Attal also wrote on X: “Violence and intimidation have no place in our democracy. They have no place in our republic.”

Meanwhile a candidate for Marine Le PenThe far-right Rassemblement National said it was suspending its campaign following an altercation with a shop owner in Savoy, southeastern France.

Marie Dauchy wrote on social media that she had been “violently attacked” at a market on Wednesday morning.

French media reported that the man tried to knock some leaflets out of her hand and shouted insults at her and threatened to kill her.

He was taken into custody and denies making death threats, officials said.

It comes as voters in France Get ready to go to the polls for the second time this Sunday, July 7th.

More than 30,000 additional police officers would be deployed across the country to ensure that there was no unrest, the government said.

In the first round of voting last SundayThe Rassemblement National secured 33% of the vote, while the left-wing New Popular Front coalition received almost 28%.

Unrest in Paris before polling stations close

A poll conducted on Wednesday suggested that Marine Le Pen’s Rassemblement National (RN) would not win a majority of seats in Sunday’s election, suggesting that efforts by France’s mainstream parties to block the far right could be successful.

Mr Attal had previously stated that he was convinced that the cross-party attempt to wrest the majority from the far-right RN could be successful.

In recent days, crowds of protesters have gathered across Paris to demonstrate against the far right. fears that the Olympic Games, which are due to begin in the French capital in a few weeks, could be disrupted.
