France’s government spokesman is attacked in election campaign just days before crucial elections | World news

Just days before an important parliamentary election, French government spokeswoman Prisca Thevenot was attacked during the election campaign, officials said on Thursday.

Thevenot, a candidate of the centrist Ensemble alliance led by Macron, her deputy and a party activist were putting up election posters near Paris on Wednesday evening in the run-up to the July 7 parliamentary elections when they were attacked by a group, Prime Minister Gabriel Attal said on the social media platform X.

Media reported that Thevenot was not injured and will continue her campaign, but her deputy and the party activist were taken to hospital. It was initially unclear what kind of injuries they sustained.

The public prosecutor’s office said it had launched an investigation into an armed attack on a public official, but did not provide any information on the motive for the attack.

Four people, including three minors, are in custody, the public prosecutor’s office said.
