First weather warning day: excessive heat, strong storm

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – Today is another First weather warning day due to extreme heat this afternoon and the risk of some strong thunderstorms this afternoon.

4 JULY – FIRST ALARM DAY

On Independence Day, we’re not only concerned about heat and humidity, but also the threat of afternoon showers and thunderstorms. Highs are still expected to be in the high 30s, with a heat index as high as 43 degrees in the afternoon. Heat advisories are in effect for most of the Midstate until 7 p.m. tonight.

With many of us planning a day outdoors, keep an eye out for severe thunderstorms in the afternoon and early evening. Not everyone will experience a thunderstorm, but for those who do, any thunderstorm can bring very heavy rain and even gusty winds. Be prepared to move your plans indoors this afternoon. The good news is that the thunderstorms will subside once the daytime warmth subsides, and most areas will be dry in time for the fireworks!

Tonight will remain warm and humid with lows in the 25s. More showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop tonight as a cold front approaches the Midwest.

LATE WEEK AND WEEKEND

When the cold front moves through on Friday, it will bring a few scattered showers and thunderstorms in the morning, and a few of them will linger into the afternoon. As the day progresses, there will be more dry periods. It will still be hot and humid, with highs in the 30s and a heat index of nearly 38 degrees.

The weekend promises to be dry and a little less humid, with highs in the 30s and above on both Saturday and Sunday. There will be a few clouds on both days, but otherwise plenty of sunshine.

NEXT WEEK

The heat will continue into early next week, with temperatures around 35 degrees on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, with temporary thunderstorms on each day.
