13-year-old girl ‘tragically murdered’ in shooting at Washington mall, police say

A 16-year-old suspect from Edmonds, Washington, is in custody, police said.

A 13-year-old girl died Wednesday when she was hit by gunfire during a fight at a mall in Lynnwood, Washington, police said.

Jayda Woods-Johnson was “tragically murdered” at Alderwood Mall, Lynnwood police said.

“The suspect has been identified as a 16-year-old male from Edmonds,” the department said in a statement. “He was brought in by his mother and is in custody. He will be booked into jail on a murder charge.”

Two groups had an “altercation” near the food court of the shopping center, police said. Woods-Johnson did not belong to either group and was apparently hit by a stray bullet, police said.

Police said they are still searching for the weapon used in the shooting.
