The police found a man on the porch who had suffered gunshot wounds to the head and upper body.

Authorities attempted to resuscitate the man but later declared him dead.

The building, the Martin Luther King Jr. House, appears to be a one-room complex “serving a community of people with disabilities,” according to online records.

Police are working to clear the house and ensure the safety of all residents.

Officials have also closed traffic in the area.

No information was available about the circumstances of the shooting.

The Scanner has asked BPD for information and will update this story when it is available.

Update, 10:55 p.m. The medical examiner’s office has recovered the body of the man killed in a shooting in Berkeley on Friday evening.

Homicide investigators are on site and the block remains cordoned off for ongoing investigations.

This is Berkeley’s second murder investigation this year.

Neighborhood residents said the house where the shooting took place was a popular gathering place with no significant oversight.

Community members said the management company is in the process of relocating residents from the building due to program changes.
