Man dies in Westwater Canyon, cause under investigation

MOAB, Grand County — A man died after being found by passersby at the Colorado River on Wednesday.

According to the Grand County Sheriff’s Office, deputies and search and rescue crews responded to a 911 call at 1:32 p.m. that there was “an unresponsive male with CPR in progress” in Westwater Canyon.

When emergency responders arrived, the sheriff’s office reported the man was dead. The exact cause of death is currently under investigation by the state medical examiner’s office.

The office said the location where the man was found was remote near Bowling Alley and the Room of Doom, requiring rescue crews to respond by land, air and water.

“The Grand County Sheriff’s Office would like to extend its deepest condolences and sympathy to the family members of this tragic event at this time,” the office said in a Facebook post.

Out of respect for his family, the office is keeping the man’s name secret.
