18-year-old from Ohio dies in drowning accident in North Carolina

NAGS HEAD, NC (WNCT) — An 18-year-old from Columbus drowned in North Carolina’s Outer Banks on Wednesday.

Representatives from the Nags Head Fire and Rescue Department and the Nags Head Police Department confirmed that a body was pulled from the ocean on Wednesday.


They confirmed the body was that of an 18-year-old from Columbus. Her identity has not yet been released.

At approximately 2:51 p.m., officers were called to Gull Street Public Beach Access on the South Virginia Dare Trail for a report of swimmers in distress. Two of the swimmers made it safely back to shore, and one was assisted by a lifeguard. The third swimmer was not seen at this time.

Air support was requested, but before it arrived, a Nags Head Police Officer located the third swimmer using a drone. The third swimmer was brought to shore by a lifeguard and taken to a hospital. Despite medical intervention, the third swimmer was pronounced dead on arrival.

The other swimmers were taken to a hospital for treatment.
