Two teenagers arrested on suspicion of gang activities

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — A 14-year-old and a 15-year-old were arrested Tuesday, July 2, after a months-long investigation led to the two being identified as suspects in various crimes, including bringing a weapon onto school property.

According to CSPD, the investigation began in early 2024 when the Strategic Investigations Unit (SIU) began investigating members of a local gang for numerous violent and firearms crimes. During the course of the investigation, investigators obtained search warrants for two different homes, one in southeast Colorado Springs and the other near Prospect Lake.

On July 2, the first search warrant was executed by the Tactical Enforcement Unit (TEU) in the 2100 block of Delta Drive, near South Academy Boulevard and El Morro Road. This search resulted in the arrest of a 15-year-old boy for illegal possession of a firearm on school property.

The SIU and TEU then began searching the second home in the 1000 block of East Rio Grande Street, west of Prospect Lake. Before the search warrant was executed, a 14-year-old suspect was observed walking away from the home. When officers attempted to make contact, the suspect pulled out a handgun and ran.

During a brief chase, the suspect threw the gun into a yard and was caught a short distance away. It turned out that the gun had been stolen during a burglary in 2023.

The 15-year-old was booked into the Zebulon Pike Juvenile Detention Center on his warrant and faces new charges related to several other investigations, including auto theft, menacing, violating protection orders and possession of a handgun. The 14-year-old was also booked into the Juvenile Detention Center on charges of auto theft, menacing and possession of a handgun.

Because of their age, none of the teenagers are identified.
