Warning day due to intense heat expected on Independence Day

Weather forecast for Northern California: Extreme heat expected on Independence Day

Afternoon temperatures in the valley will reach between 40 and 42 degrees Celsius.

RIGHT NOW. LET’S GO TO METEOROLOGY PROFESSIONAL HEATHER WALDMAN. IT SEEMS LIKE SOME OF THE SMOKE IS DISSOLVING A LITTLE. YES, WE REALLY SEEN SOME SCATTERED AMOUNTS OF SMOKE IN THE VALLEY TODAY. NOTHING THAT’S HAVING A NEGATIVE IMPACT ON THE AIR QUALITY. WE’LL KEEP AN EYE ON IT TONIGHT WHEN THE TEMPERATURE DROPS. BUT IT’S GOING TO HAPPEN SLOWLY TODAY. THEN WE TYPICALLY SEE SOME OF THESE SMOKE PARTICLES SINKING A LITTLE CLOSER TO THE GROUND. BUT EYE ON THE VIEW OVER SUTTER HEALTH PARK IS BEAUTIFUL. THE FLAGS ARE NOT MOVING AT ALL, BUT. IF THERE IS A BREEZE, IT’S STILL COMING FROM THE NORTH, AND THAT’S A HOT, DRY BREEZE. IF IT’S COMING JUST THROUGH 104, IT’S 105 AT THE EXECUTIVE AIRPORT IN STOCKTON. IT’S 85 DEGREES IN SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, WHICH IS HOT FOR THIS ALTITUDE. BUT FOR US IN THE VALLEY, THAT SOUNDS PRETTY NICE RIGHT NOW. WE STILL HAVE THE RED FLAG WARNING IN EFFECT. THIS WILL CONTINUE UNTIL 8 PM. THE GUSTIEST WINDS WERE ON THE WEST SIDE OF THE VALLEY THIS MORNING. IN THE LAST SIX HOURS OR SO WE’VE REALLY SEEN THE WINDS REDUCING, SO THAT’S GOOD NEWS. BUT AGAIN, THE NORTHERN FLOW IS GOING TO COME THROUGH THE VALLEY. SO THE AIR IS STILL VERY DRY. AND OF COURSE THE FUELS ARE VERY DRY AS WELL. WE’RE TRACKIN’ SOME FIRES, SOME NEW FIRES THAT STARTED TODAY, SO THAT RISK IS STILL THERE. BUT IN TIME INDEPENDENCE DAY AND FRIDAY WHEN THE HIGH MOVES A LITTLE FURTHER EAST, WE’RE LOSEIN’ S NORTHERN FLOW AND HONESTLY WE’RE REALLY LOSEIN’ A LOT OF WIND. THE AIR WON’T BE MOVING AS MUCH OVER THE NEXT FEW DAYS, IT MIGHT FEEL A LITTLE MORE STAGNATED, IT MIGHT FEEL A LITTLE HOTTER. I WANT TO TALK ABOUT THE MORNING HEAT IN A SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT WAY. YOU’RE LOOKING AT A MODEL THAT THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HAS BEEN USING THIS YEAR. IT TRYING TO EXPLAIN THE IMPACT THAT THE HEAT CAN HAVE DIRECTLY ON YOU DEPENDING ON WHERE YOU ARE. THREE THINGS ARE TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION. HOW LONG THE HEAT HAS LASTED. WE KNOW THAT THIS HEAT WAVE HAS BEEN ON FOR A SHORT TIME AND IT’S GOING TO STAY. HOW WARM IS IT COMPARED TO AVERAGE? WE KNOW THAT TEMPERATURES TODAY AND TOMORROW WILL BE CLOSE TO RECORDS IN SOME AREAS, AND IT TAKES DATA FROM THE CDC INTO ACCOUNT. SO WHAT HAVE WE SEEN? TEMPERATURES LIKE THIS HAVING IMPACT ON THE HEALTHCARE SYSTEM LEADING TO HEAT-RELATED INJURIES AND ILLNESS. HAS IT EMERGED AN AREA LIKE YOU SEE HERE IN PURPLE, IN THE FOOTHILLS, ON THE WEST SIDE OF THE VALLEY? THERE THE HEAT MAY HAVE A MORE EXTREME IMPACT ON YOU TOMORROW, A LITTLE LESS AS YOU GO INTO THE VALLEY WE’LL HAVE A LITTLE OF THAT LAND CURRENCY, BUT STILL A TEMPERATURE OF ABOUT 42 DEGREES FOR SACRAMENTO. THAT’S NOTHING YOU SHOULD DESPISE IN YOUR VACATION PLANS, SO JUST KEEP IT ALL IN MIND. THIS IS WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE TOMORROW FOR THE SIERRA: TEMPERATURES IN THE HIGH 30S TO THE LOW 90S AROUND TRUCKEE AND TAHOE. AFTER A START IN THE HIGH 40S, TEMPERATURES SHOULD BE ABOUT 70 DEGREES AROUND FIREWORKS TIME IN THE FOOTHILLS. TEMPERATURES BETWEEN 101 AND 104 DEGREES. TOMORROW. SO AGAIN PRETTY CLOSE TO WHERE WE WERE TODAY. A LITTLE BETTER LAND BREEZE IN SOME PLACES. TOMORROW SAN FRANCISCO WILL STAY IN THE 80S, FAIRFIELD IN THE 100S, NAPA WILL GO BACK DOWN TO THE 90S IN THE SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY. TOMORROW AFTERNOON HIGHS WILL BE BETWEEN 40 AND 41 DEGREES. OF COURSE IT WILL BE HOTTER IN THE SACRAMENTO VALLEY. WE ARE LOSING THE NORTHERN BREEZE BUT TEMPERATURES WILL BE 42 DEGREES AFTER STARTING IN THE MID-25S. AND AGAIN THE OUTLOOK FOR THE FIREWORKS TOMORROW EVENING AROUND 9 PM, TEMPERATURES ARE STILL BETWEEN 30 AND 35 DEGREES EXCEPT OF COURSE IN THE SIERRA WHERE TEMPERATURES WILL BE 21 DEGREES. BUT YES, WE ARE STILL TALKING ABOUT THAT INTENSE HEAT ALL HOLIDAY WEEKEND OVER. It looks like it’s a little more convincing now, like it’s going to ease up next week, and listen, after a few days of NE
