Channel 2’s Audrey Washington I spoke with Elaine Bryan of the Jamaican Consulate in Atlanta as Bryan tried to contact friends and family in Jamaica.

“Hello Ms. Campbell, I’m calling from the consulate,” Bryan told his colleague Marva Campbell over the phone Wednesday.

“How’s it going in Jamaica?” Bryan asked Campbell.

Marva Campbell, Jamaica’s deputy consul general, explained the situation Wednesday afternoon.

“In Kingston we have rain, but it’s not heavy. But there are sections of St. Mary’s Island and Portland where it’s very windy and rainy,” Campbell said.

Conditions changed on Wednesday afternoon.

Bryan said in Washington that she had received calls from concerned Jamaican-Americans living in the Atlanta metropolitan area.

“(One woman) listed her entire family and said if anything happens to them, I should stay in touch with them. So we’re like two channels to explain all the updates to the community in Georgia,” Bryan explained.

To help, Bryan worked with partners, including Delta Airlines, to collect boxes of supplies to send to Jamaica.

“Drinks, snacks, emergency medical supplies,” Bryan said.

“I’m concerned about the underserved population who may not have construction on their homes, meaning zinc roofs, or who are living in places that are not permanent,” Bryan added.
