Attention license plate stingy people: Denver police plan to begin a targeted check of expired vehicle registrations and expired temporary license plates starting July 15.

You know who you are: Join and avoid a $95 fine in addition to registration and renewal fees.

The planned enforcement period is one month and ends in mid-August.

A statement on Wednesday said the move was a direct response to requests from local residents.

“DPD continually receives complaints from residents about these violations and this enforcement period is in response to community concerns,” DPD wrote.

The move overrides a DPD policy introduced in May that prohibits officers from conducting traffic stops for minor offenses such as cracked windshields, defective headlights and, crucially, expired registrations and license plates.

The ability to temporarily suspend one’s policy was built into the policy language; DPD stressed that it would not suspend or reverse the policy long-term. The goal is to focus officers’ time and resources on more dangerous traffic violations such as reckless driving and speeding.

Denver residents can find information about registration and registration renewal online.
