Witness describes attack by rabid fox in community center

A Winston-Salem woman says she saw a rabid fox attack someone just feet away from her. Joshua Davis has spoken with this eyewitness and is passing on her warning to others. Mercury Worth is a camp counselor here at Sims Recreation Center. Last Thursday, she went outside to go home only to see her mother honking to warn her of an animal coming toward her. I jumped on the roof of the car because she was pointing and then I thought it was a dog. And it’s a fox. The Forsyth County Health Department says a fox attacked two people that day near the Recreation Center and Old Salem. THE FOX TESTED POSITIVE FOR RABIES. THE 19-YEAR-OLD CAMP COUNSELOR SAYS SHE SAW THE FOX ATTACK, A CAMP VOLUNTEER, A LADY WHO WAS ALREADY OUT HERE WITH THE PAINTINGS, THE KIDS, THE PAINTINGS THE KIDS HAD DONE EARLIER IN THE DAY. UM, AND HE BITES HER ON THE ARM, MAKER SAID. IT WAS A MOMENT OF PANIC. THE FOX BITES HER PURSE AS SHE WAS THROWING IT AROUND. THEN HE TRIES TO COME BACK AND BITE HER AGAIN. SHE WAS WEARING JEANS, SO HE WAS ACTUALLY JUST PULLING ON HER PANTS. AND THEN WE TRY TO SCARE HIM AWAY AND HE RUNS INTO THE WOODS, SHE SAYS. THE WOMAN DROVE HERSELF TO THE HOSPITAL. SHE CAN’T THINK WHAT COULD HAVE HAPPENED IF THE KIDS WERE OUTSIDE WHEN THIS HAPPENED? WE TOOK THE KIDS OUTSIDE THAT DAY, BUT WE WERE NOT OUTSIDE FOR LONG, SO WE HAD ABOUT 12 OR 13 KIDS THAT DAY. AND THEY’RE SMALL, AGED FOUR TO THE OLDEST. WE HAVE 11, SO THEY’RE SMALLER KIDS. THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN TRAGIC. AND SHE HAS A MESSAGE FOR ANYONE SPENDING TIME OUTSIDE: JUST BE AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS BECAUSE THAT COULD HAVE BEEN ME BECAUSE I COMPLETELY TURNED MY BACK AND WASN’T PAYING ATTENTION BECAUSE IT’S JUST SO UNUSUAL. BUT ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN. THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT SAYS THE FOX WAS FOUND AND CAUGHT SHORTLY AFTER THE ATTACKS, BUT THEY WARN ANYONE WHO MAY HAVE COME INTO CONTACT WITH IT FROM JUNE 20 TO JUNE 27 TO CONTACT THEIR DOCTOR AND FORSYTH COUNTY ANIMAL HELP IN WINSTON-SALEM. I’M JOSH
