Houston artist Muka takes us into his studio

Houston – Houston-based artist Muka moved to Los Angeles after graduating from college and intended to work in public relations; but her plan quickly changed.

“It wasn’t really fulfilling, I wanted to do something more and be creative,” she said.

With the support of his family and friends, Muka took a chance.

“I quit my job, picked up a paintbrush and started painting and from there everything exploded,” Muka said.

Today, at 32, she can sell her works at auction. Constantly evolving, Muka has curated numerous collections while remaining true to her initial goal.

“I think the same vein is still there, the whole concept started with my desire to explore the inner child,” Muka said.

Muka grew up in Texas in a conservative family. She was raised Catholic and was never able to express herself authentically until she began painting.

“With my art, I want to say everything I couldn’t say when I was a child,” Muka explains.

Her art is loud, bold, whimsical, but unapologetic. She spends hours creating in her part of Hardy South Studios in downtown Houston. Muka’s “Boots in My Roots” collection combines being a Texas girl with a touch of LA style.

“It’s about my experience living in Los Angeles with the sassy, fast-paced, luxurious lifestyle that’s there, and then coming back to Houston and getting back in touch with my Southern roots here in Houston,” she explained.
