Seven-year-old boy dies in accident on farm in Franklin County

According to Pennsylvania State Police, a 7-year-old boy died Tuesday morning after an accident on a farm near Mercersburg.

The child, whose name is not given in the police report, became stuck in a machine while helping with field work. It happened around 10:15 a.m. on a farm in the area of Mercersburg Road and Young Road, south of Welsh Run and west of Bino in Montgomery Township.

There is no evidence of third-party negligence, police said.

The police report did not say whether the child’s death was determined at the scene or in the hospital. A police spokesperson did not immediately respond to an email asking this question.

Members of the Mercersburg MMP&W Volunteer Fire Department responded to the incident. The fire department posted on Facebook discussing the impact on first responders.

“Sometimes people don’t understand the physical and emotional toll that being a firefighter/EMT/Paramedic can take on someone. We do this because we love helping our community and because we love saving/protecting lives and property. Sometimes, though, that comes at a cost! We may be tough, but we are heartbroken!” the Facebook post says.
