State Police investigate fatal motorcycle crash in Smyrna – Delaware State Police

Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal motorcycle crash that occurred yesterday afternoon in Smyrna that left one man dead.

On July 2, 2024, at approximately 2:02 p.m., a 2017 Toyota Camry was traveling northbound in the left turn lane on Dupont Parkway at the intersection with the DE State Route 1 on-ramp. At the same time, a 2002 Yamaha YZFR1 motorcycle was traveling southbound in the left lane on Dupont Parkway approaching the same intersection. The preliminary investigation revealed that the Toyota was turning left toward the DE SR 1 on-ramp northbound as the Yamaha entered the intersection. As a result, the front of the Toyota struck the front of the Yamaha, causing the motorcyclist to be ejected.

The driver of the Yamaha, a 54-year-old man from Dover, Delaware, was pronounced dead at the scene. His name is being withheld pending notification of his family and relatives.

The driver of the Toyota, a 26-year-old woman from Bear, Delaware, was not injured.

The road was closed for about four hours while the accident scene was being investigated and cleared.
