Two Houston Sports Icons Nominated for 2024 ESPYS Awards

HOUSTON (KIAH) – ESPN has announced the nominees for the 2024 ESPYS, and Houston’s own Simone Biles and the Houston Texans quarterback, CJ Stroud were named two of the best nominees of the evening. The gymnast is in the running for Best Returning Athletewhile the football star is nominated for Best Athlete in the Making.

The event recognizes the best performances in the professional sports industry. It will be presented by Capital One and will be broadcast LIVE Thursday July 11 at 8 p.m. on ABCThe evening’s host is a decorated tennis icon Serena Williams.

Other nominees include Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomestennis player Coco Gauff, Jaylen Brown, Boston Celtics forward and WNBA player, Caitlin Clark. Fan vote for ALL Categories are open on the ESPYS website.

2024 ESPYS Nominations Statistics

  • Mahomes and Ohtani are both up for their second “Outstanding Athlete, Men’s Sports” award. If either of them wins the award, they will join the rare category of athletes to have won the category multiple times. LeBron James and Tiger Woods are among that list.
  • Clark and Gauff are both in the running to win their first ESPYS Awards for the best women’s players in sports, competing against two-time WNBA nominee A’ja Wilson.
  • Ohanti is expected to face two-time World Series MVP Corey Seager in the MLB MVP category. Ronald Acuna Jr. (Atlanta Braves) and Gerrit Cole (New York Yankees) are also in the category. A full list of nominations can be found HERE.
