UPDATE: Suspect killed by police during SWAT standoff in Abilene | KTAB

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – A standoff in south Abilene ended Tuesday afternoon with the police killing a suspect.

The standoff occurred around 2 p.m. at a home near the corner of S 7th Street and Alameda Street.

The suspect, identified as Jeremy Bennett, allegedly pulled out a gun and threatened two women in a house before fleeing into a nearby apartment building, where he later barricaded himself.

There was also an arrest warrant against Bennett for illegal possession of weapons.

Members of the SWAT team and crisis negotiation team attempted to negotiate with Bennett for several hours in order to peacefully arrest him.

However, they say Bennett eventually left the house with a gun in his hand and allegedly pointed it at police officers after they attempted to disarm him with a “less-lethal impact weapon.”

When the gun was pointed at the officers, they opened fire, hitting Bennett at least once.

Bennett was taken to hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave as per regulations while the Texas Rangers and the Abilene Police Department conduct their investigation into this officer-involved shooting.
