Call for papers – Sexual health and ageing: overcoming stigma and addressing health needs

BMC Geriatrics invites submissions to our collection on the topic of “Sexual health in old age”.

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines sexual health as “…a state of physical, emotional, mental and social well-being in relation to sexuality; it is not merely the absence of disease, dysfunction or infirmity.” Sexual health is vital to the overall health and well-being of the individual. Sexual health in older adults is a complex aspect of elder care that is often overlooked. Older adults may face unique challenges related to sexual health. Barriers may include societal stigmas toward sex and sexuality, inadequate access to health resources and information to promote sexual health, and age-related changes that may impact sexual function and satisfaction.

We invite submissions that examine the factors influencing sexual health in old age, interventions to promote sexual well-being in old age, and the role of health care providers in meeting the sexual needs of the aging population. Topics of interest include:

  • Understanding the effects of aging on sexual function, desire and satisfaction
  • Investigating the role of societal attitudes and stigma in the development of sexual health behaviors and experiences among older adults
  • Identifying barriers to access and use of sexual health care among older people
  • Research into effective interventions to promote sexual well-being in old age
  • Investigating the interface between sexual and mental health, chronic diseases, medications, and lifestyle factors in older adults
  • Communication about sex and sexuality in older adults

By promoting research and open dialogue on the sexual health of older adults, this collection aims to challenge stereotypes, promote inclusivity, and advocate for comprehensive health care that meets the diverse needs of older adults.

This collection supports and expands research related to SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being and SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities.
