Smithfield, Rhode Island woman struck and killed by truck near fireworks display – NECN

According to NBC affiliate WJAR, a woman was hit and killed by a semi-trailer truck in Smithfield, Rhode Island, earlier this week.

Aliana Ciacciarelli, 25, was riding her bicycle on Pleasant View Avenue around 9:30 p.m. Monday when she fell and was struck by the truck, Smithfield police said.

The incident occurred after the city’s annual Independence Day fireworks display on July 4 in Deerfield Park, WJAR reports.

The truck driver did not stop, police said, but was later identified. It is unclear whether he will face charges.

It was not immediately clear whether Ciacciarelli, a health care worker, rode her bicycle to the fireworks.

A former colleague of Ciacciarelli told WJAR she was a nurse in the emergency room at Kent Hospital.

“She was very smart. She was also very funny and good with people,” Mark Demers told WJAR.

A store owner also told WJAR that cars on Pleasant View Avenue tend to drive too fast.

“The traffic on this Pleasant View Avenue is horrific all day long. It’s 35 miles per hour all the way down here and cars are going 60 or even 70 miles per hour,” Anthony Polseno, owner of Pleasant View Orchards Store, told WJAR. “Something needs to be done on this road.”

The crash remains under investigation.

Anyone with information about the accident should contact Smithfield Police at 401-231-2500.
