Grateful Dead simultaneously reaches new top 10 positions in several Billboard charts

This week Grateful Dead returns to the Billboard charts in America, although it’s not like they’ve been gone for very long. The rock band regularly sends archival and live releases to various lists, as their fanbase remains hungry for material they’ve never heard before.

The group scores another win in several rankings this week, but not with a brand new achievement. One of their older studio collections makes its first appearance in a number of rankings it has never appeared in before, and returns to another following the release of a special edition celebrating the title’s fiftieth anniversary.

Grateful Dead from Mars Hotel was originally released in 1974 and was one of the Grateful Dead’s last proper albums. The set was a commercial success at the time on the Billboard 200, having peaked at number 16 at one point. It now reappears at number 58 on this list of the most consumed albums in the US during that time period.

In the last tracking frame, each version of Grateful Dead from Mars Hotel sold a total of just over 14,300 copies across America. Almost all of those – except for a few hundred – were actual purchases, although streaming activity played a small part in the track’s renewed success on the Billboard 200.

This list is the only Billboard Roster, the Grateful Dead from Mars Hotel is out this week, which is the highest it has achieved in the past. The decades-old collection is making its debut on four other sales platforms, as it sold well enough to reach the top ranks on several.

Grateful Dead from Mars Hotel debuts in the top 10 of two charts this week. The full-length album opens at number 4 on the Vinyl Albums chart. It also opens at number 5 on the Top Album Sales chart.

The band’s 1974 project is also new for two other line-ups and almost reached the top 10 there too. Grateful Dead from Mars Hotel opens at number 11 on the Top Rock Albums chart and at number 14 on the Top Rock & Alternative Albums list.

Grateful Dead from Mars Hotel was re-released to mark the title’s 50th anniversary. A press release announcing the exciting release stated that the expanded edition includes never-before-heard demos, remastered excerpts from the original version, and “a previously unreleased, nearly complete live recording of an epic concert at the University of Nevada-Reno on May 12, 1974.”
