Mentally disabled woman raped; five accused in Assam

Karimganj, Assam, July 3 (HBTV): Five persons in Karimganj district of Assam were arrested for allegedly gang-raping a mentally challenged woman in Kayasthagram district. Five youths allegedly dragged the woman into an autorickshaw (which was captured on CCTV) and raped her.

Karimganj Superintendent of Police Partha Pratim Das ordered a comprehensive investigation into the case. The Neelambazaar police team arrested the youths and ordered an inquiry. The accused were identified as one Fakar Mia, one Abdul Mastak, one Samim Uddin, one Riyaz Uddin and one Pranesh Sharma.

Since new criminal laws come into force in the country on July 1, it remains to be seen what punishment the defendants will face.
