Port Houston, a leader in community management

Announcement of the beneficiaries of the 2024 Community grants

The Port of Houston Authority Port Commission met for its June monthly meeting. Port Commissioner Dean Corgey, who chaired the meeting, opened the meeting by reporting on the significant community outreach efforts conducted during the year. “During the month of May, nearly two thousand members from surrounding communities were engaged in multiple forums, including community events, workshops and meetings,” he said.

“I am pleased to see such commitment to the community members who live near the canal,” said Commissioner Corgey. “We care deeply about our neighbors and work hard to be a strong pillar of the community.”

That list of meetings included those hosted by Port Houston, with participation from representatives of the Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, as well as local communities and advocacy groups.

Following the commission meeting, the Community Relations Committee reviewed more detailed information about Port Houston’s community outreach work, including its community grants and maritime education programs, as well as support for green space improvements in area communities totaling $2 million over four years.

To further demonstrate its commitment to investing in community stewardship, the Community Relations Committee approved a $400,000 grant to 19 local nonprofits and cities. These programs, which closely align with Port Houston’s outreach priorities, will have a significant impact on local community residents. View the list of 2024 Community Grant recipients here.

At the commission’s regular meeting, Executive Director Roger Guenther also reiterated Port Houston’s focus on the well-being of those who live and work near the English Channel. “We will continue to engage with community members on the work we do here at the port, ensuring your voices are heard and your concerns are addressed,” he said.

Guenther also highlighted the second annual Inclusive Procurement Day held in early June. More than 250 attendees were able to engage with Port Houston staff and key contractors at the event, learning more about Port Houston’s procurement process and how to become certified as a Port Houston supplier.

The executive director also announced that the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts’ Transparency Stars program has recognized Port Houston as a local government that “goes above and beyond in transparency efforts.” The program recognizes government entities that provide clear and meaningful financial information by publishing financial documents, summaries, visualizations, downloadable data and other relevant information.

Finally, Guenther noted that the Houston Ship Channel Expansion Project (Project 11) continues to progress and that overall activity at the Port of Houston remains strong. Check out the latest cargo volume news here.
