Tim Weah’s USMNT suspension will be carried over to the Nations League

Tim Weah will miss the U.S. men’s national team’s first game after returning to the CONCACAF Nations League.

Weah’s two-match Copa America ban will be carried over into the 2024/25 Nations League schedule, US Soccer announced Tuesday. The 24-year-old served the first game of that ban on Monday in the 1-0 group final loss to Uruguay.

He will now miss the first leg of the USMNT’s final Nations League quarterfinal match in November. The USMNT automatically qualified for the quarterfinals after winning the 2023-24 edition in early March.

Weah was sent off in the USMNT’s 2-1 loss to Panama last Thursday after striking Panama’s Roderick Miller in the head in the 18th minute. The Juventus winger/full-back was originally suspended for one game for his conduct, but CONMEBOL increased his suspension and fined US Soccer $3,500.

He will be available for selection when the USMNT faces Canada and New Zealand in a friendly in September. The USMNT also has a home game scheduled against Panama on October 12 in Austin, Texas.

The USMNT suffered a disappointing loss in Kansas City on Monday night that could lead to the firing of head coach Gregg Berhalter.
