Prince George’s passes resolution to promote police training – NBC4 Washington

Prince George’s County leaders passed a resolution to support police officer recruitment and retention, calling on Bowie State University, the University of Maryland and Prince George’s Community College to work together to develop a pilot program that would offer tuition and credit discounts to officers.

Prince George’s County police said they have been understaffed by more than 350 officers since May.

The pilot program would provide Prince George’s County police officers the opportunity to continue or complete their studies at the facilities.

“It helps everyone when our officers have the opportunity to advance and get their education,” said Council Member Jolene Ivey. “I think it’s good for everyone. It helps them become even better people in the community.”

“I want to have that lateral mobility and opportunities for advancement,” said Percel Alston of Prince George’s Community College. “If I provide those things and good stability at the top and good leadership at the top, I can still attract good people. There are great, great candidates here in Prince George’s County and we just need to make sure we utilize those resources.”

Last year, the County Council passed a law providing a $2,500 property tax credit to first responders who reside in the county.

There is also a $10,000 signing bonus for entry-level positions and a $15,000 signing bonus for experienced officers.
