One dead at Fashion Island mall in Newport Beach – NBC Los Angeles

One person was found dead after shots were fired at the Fashion Island shopping center in Newport Beach, the Newport Beach Fire Department said Tuesday.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found the dead woman in the parking lot of the Barnes & Noble bookstore in the mall.

A woman at the Barnes & Noble bookstore in the mall said she and others were trapped inside the store as a crime scene was being prepared outside.

A shopper also told NBCLA that she was stopped by another shopper as she parked her car on the way to a Starbucks at the mall.

“I had just parked my car when a girl came up to me and said she heard gunshots and that I should leave the area,” the woman said.

She added that her friend, who she was meeting at the cafe, witnessed a robbery in which three men attempted to rob a woman. But when a Good Samaritan intervened, the three robbers fled in what was believed to be a yellow Camry.

As they fled, they ran over the woman and fired three shots, the woman told NBCLA.

Authorities urged the public to avoid the area while the investigation continues.

Police said several officers were dispatched to the mall.

This is an evolving story.
