Grandfather dies when customer fires gun in Kentucky gun shop

A new grandfather was killed at a gun store in Kentucky on Saturday when another customer accidentally fired a weapon, police said.

The tragedy occurred around 8:30 p.m. at Humphrey Double H Farms Enterprises Inc. in Carrollton when an unidentified buyer who was looking at a firearm began “fiddling with it,” police said Monday.

A single shot was fired, hitting 50-year-old Chad Wainscott, who was also inside the store.

Other customers rushed to Wainscott’s aid until emergency services arrived, but the unfortunate customer succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital, according to police.

“Chad had a heart of gold…NEVER ended a conversation with goodbye, always with see you later! A thoroughly beautiful soul,” one mourner wrote on his obituary page.

No charges have been filed in the fatal shooting, but police said the shooter is cooperating with investigators.

According to his family, Wainscott – who was affectionately called “Little Chigger” in honor of his own grandfather – had recently become a grandfather to his “beloved” baby Lance.

Wainscott had been a farmer for the past few years, working alongside his father and was known in the community for his love of the outdoors.

“His love of the outdoors defined him. His favorite activities included hunting, collecting guns, hats and knives, searching for four-leaf clovers and capturing the beauty of sunsets and cows through photography. Chad was known to be most comfortable outdoors,” his grieving family said.

“Chad’s warm smile and infectious personality will be sorely missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.”
